Love is the best thing… except when it’s not.

Join us for a Q&A screening of a crowd-pleasing new Kiwi film, The People We Love, followed by a Q&A with the director, Mike Smith and actors Neill Rea and Alison Bruce, who star in the film!

ABOUT THE FILM

Maddie’s first collection of short stories is rejected by her publisher. Her boyfriend is hooking up with her best friend.. Her mother is leaving her father - for a woman. And the guy who broke her heart in high school is back in her life. Hiding out at the family beach house and ignoring her messy life, Maddie can’t resist getting involved in her family’s fragmenting relationships. And, of course, makes things worse. The People We Love is a romantic comedy/drama feature film, set in contemporary New Zealand.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Mike Smith - Writer/Director
Mike Smith is a New Zealand-based writer/director/creator. Amongst his many credits as a creator are two television comedy series and a period children’s adventure series. His screenwriting credits include his feature The People We Love and the international television success The Brokenwood Mysteries.

Neill Rea - Actor
Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School graduate Neill Rea first won attention as the likeable if mildly-unhinged Scotty, one of the Dunedin students caught up in crime in the hit movie Scarfies (1999). Since then Rea has embarked on a dual career as owner-operator of Auckland casting agency Fly Casting, while taking on a number of television and voice roles of his own. His work as casting director includes 2012 TV movie What Really Happened: Votes for Women, and the movie Kiwi Christmas. In 2014, he starred as Detective Mike Shepherd, in the first of multiple seasons of Prime’s feature-length crime series The Brokenwood Mysteries.

Alison Bruce - Actor
With a CV that includes everything from judges to Amazon queens, Alison Bruce has often been cast as the strong, unsmiling type. Yet two of her biggest screen roles completely break the mould: the fraudulent but well-meaning fortune teller in 2001 feature Magik and Rose, and the eccentric mother in the award-winning teen series Being Eve.
